Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) She was raised by the mother, grandmother, as well as her godparents. Her father was absent from her family. When she was a young girl, Ford suffered anxiety due to an obsessional disorder. Ford's love for acting grew in her early years. She was a part of the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just a few weeks, she realized this school wasn't suitable for her. Ford decided to apply instead at the Central School of Speech and Drama and eventually secured an interview on her fourth try. A classmate of hers were Shaun Dingwall, who would later have a recurring role in the role of Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford did not graduate in 1993. However, in 1991, Ford had made her debut on television on the show Surgical Spirit. At that time, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate was featured in a variety of television programmes including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning during the Nineties. Tate was also a regular performer as a theatre actor and was eventually a part of the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season between 2000 and 2001. Tate gained recognition as a stand-up comedian, which became part of her portfolio in 1996.
