Audra Mcdonald is a standout in the range of her talents and versatility as an actor and singer. As the winner of an unprecedented seven Tony Awards (two Grammy Awards) and an Emmy Award, McDonald was named to Time magazine's list of 100 influential people in 2015. In addition, she was awarded President Obama's National Medal of Arts for her achievements. A luminous soprano and an incomparable gift of telling the truth in a dramatic manner, she is as much comfortable in Broadway as well as on the stage as in her TV and film roles. Aside from her theater work she also enjoys an impressive career as an internationally acclaimed recording and concert artist. She was born into a musical family. McDonald was raised living in Fresno California and received her classical vocal training at the New York's Juilliard School. Her debut Tony Award in 1994 for the Best Performance of a Featured actress in a musical, Carousel in the Lincoln Center Theater. In the following four years, being in the Broadway premieres of Master Class by Terrence M. McNally (1996) in addition to Ragtime (1998) in 1998, she was awarded two more Tony Awards. In 2004, she received her fourth Tony acting alongside Sean Diddy Combs in A Raisin in the Sun and in 2012 she received her fifth--and her first in the lead actress category for her title role performance for her role in The Gershwins Porgy and Bess. The actress made Broadway history when she became the most decorated Tony Award performer. Her portrayal in the role of Billie Holiday at Emerson's Bar & Grill, the role which was also the catalyst for the career of her Olivier Award nominated debut on the London's West End in 2017, earned her six Tony Awards. Along with setting the record for most awards won by actors in competition, as well as becoming the first person to receive the award in all four acting categories. Her other credits for theater are The Secret Garden (1993) Marie Christine (1999) Henry IV (2004) 110 in the Shade (2007) Twelfth Night (2009) in which she made her Public Theater Shakespeare in the Park debut Shuffle Along or the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed (2016) Frankie and Johnny in Clair de Lune (2019) as well as Ohio State Murders (2023). The Peabody Award-winning CBS show Having Our Say The Delany Sisters The First 100 Years which initially introduced McDonald viewers to her talents as a dramatic actor. The actress then starred with Kathy Bates and Victor Garber in the critically acclaimed 1999 remake by ABC and Disney of Annie and in 2000 she had a recurring role on the NBC's hit show Law & Order Special Victims Unit. McDonald, who earned the Emmy Award nomination for 1999 for her performance in the HBO adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play Wit which was written and performed by Emma Thompson, made her return on the network's air in 2003 to star in the drama on politics Mister Sterling. The film was written and produced by Emmy Award-winning Lawrence O'Donnell Jr. Early in 2006, McDonald joined the WB's The Bedford Diaries. The next year she was a recurring actor on NBC's Kidnapped. In 2016, McDonald was nominated for an additional Emmy award for her appearance on HBO's Lady Day at Emerson's Bar Restaurant & Grill, a movie-special. In 2021, she starred alongside Taylor Schilling and Steven Pasquale in the film The Bite, a pandemic drama co-produced by Spectrum Originals and CBS Studios. In 2009, she was the U.S. Attorney Liz Lawrence on CBS's drama about lawyers The Good Wife. In 2018 McDonald took on the role of Liz Reddick as a regular in Paramount+'s The Good Fight. She was awarded three Critics Choice Award nods for this performance. Presently, she is acting as a guest in Julian Fellowes' historical drama The Gilded Age, which airs on HBO.
